What plan I'm going to follow, at least. I'm going to follow the diet they put women on who have gestational diabetes. Why, you may ask? Well, there are a couple reasons...
First of all, this is how I need to be eating anyway with my PCOS and my insulin resistance. It will help regulate my disorder AND help me lose weight... which will only help me in trying to get pregnant as well.
Secondly, when I do manage to get pregnant, this is how I will need to be eating then too. I may not get gestational diabetes, but I very well may. And I know that I will need to eating as if I have it from the get-go. So I may as well start now.
So, what does that mean? What does the "I'm just going to pretend I have gestational diabetes" diet (or the IJGTPIHGD diet for short!) look like? In talking to a friend of mine who has it for real, it looks something like this:
3 meals plus 3 snacks a day. (So far, so good!)
At breakfast and for each snack, I can have 30 grams of carbs.
For lunch and dinner, I can have 60 grams of carbs.
I need to eat a protein of some kind at every meal.
I am going to officially start this diet after we go to the store tomorrow, because I need to stock up on the foods that I need to be eating. But I have already started being aware of the carbs in the foods that I am eating, and striving to make lower-carb choices.
I feel good about this. I think I can eat lower-carb instead of no-carb. And I think this will be good for both my overall health and my trying to get pregnant. It seems like a good fit for me. So wish me luck!
